HOW TO TASTE WINE

Here are a few tips on how to taste wine using all of your senses. Start by getting together with a group of friends for a mini tasting party. Bring notebooks and keep track of the wines you like and dislike, this will be helpful to determine which wine is which at the end of the night.

SIGHT

Look at the wine, what color is it? Is it a deep burgundy red or a crisp yellow? Hold your glass up against a piece of white paper to see it's true color.

Swirl the wine in your glass. Notice the drips that fall around the edges. These drips are called "legs". The more "legs" on your glass, the more alcohol there is in the wine.

SMELL

What do you smell in the wine? Wine "experts" may try to tell you what you are smelling, but one person's interpretation of a smell may be different from yours.

Some wines smell like fruits such as peaches or grapefruit, while others can smell like dirt or earth. Write down the many smells you see in one wine and compare with others.

TASTE

Take a sip of wine and hold it in your mouth. Inhale and try to pick out as may flavors as you can. There are many complex flavors in wine, so name the first taste that comes to mind.

FEEL

While the wine is in your mouth, feel it's texture. Is it heavy and thick, or light and crisp?

LISTEN

Just sit back, relax and listen to the good conversation and the bottles being uncorked.
